What is sustainable fashion and why is it gaining so much importance in today’s day and age all over the globe?
Sustainable Fashion like the name suggests is defined as a fair means of promoting the well-being of the people, communities and the environment. It is a process of change in the ways of thinking and practices of design, production, communication, wearing and enjoying fashion, that values diversity, prosperity and well-being of both people and the environment. When speaking of making a sustainable choice in fashion, we often misunderstand the concept of being just environmentally friendly or simply just using recyclable fabrics; However, that’s not just it! The true meaning of it lies in making conscious choices, avoiding overconsumption, giving long life to the clothes by proper care and much more.
Majority of the outfits made today have harmful chemicals and micro plastic; It is not just harmful to the environment but causes a hazard for our health in the long run. The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters today, contributing 20% of global industrial water pollution. In addition, 80 million employees of the global garment industry are denied a fair wage, with little or no job security. Non-sustainable fashion is also the cause of animal cruelty, which has led to unlawful killing and widespread mistreatment of animals across the fur, leather, exotic leather, down feather, mohair, angora, silk and wool industries.
Sustainable clothing should easily be the first choice of consumers today due to the fair practice involved in the supply and demand from the start to the very end. It ensures fair wage systems, renewable and non-toxic raw materials and its resourcefulness pre, during and post the life of the product. The choice of opting for sustainable clothing is the first step towards uprooting endless growth, unfair practices, overproduction and overconsumption; And giving fashion a richer and more valuable definition.
